He obtained his PhD in Biological Sciences from the Jeonbuk National University, Korea in 2003. He is currently supervising 7 postgraduate students and has secured grants worth 100 million KRW(WON) per year. His research interests include to reveal the mechanism by which the “Axon Guidance” gene is involved in the formation of neural circuits. One major direction emerging in the field of modern neurobiology is to understand the mechanisms that control the formation of complex and sophisticated neural networks at the molecular level. First of all, Drosophila is recognized as an ideal model animal for neurobiological research on this topic because the function of axon guidance genes, which is involved in forming neural networks, is evolutionarily well conserved from Drosophila to human. It is not well known by what exact mechanism these Axon guidance genes are involved in forming networks between cells and what effect they have on adult behavioral patterns when the function of these genes is actually eliminated. Therefore, his team in the neurogenesis laboratory seeks to find answers to these problems through the following research directions. Another research topic that he has recently developed a new interest in is the search for genes that contribute to the development of degenerative brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. First, a reporter model Drosophila that mimics the proteolysis-mediated signaling of APP, the gene that causes Alzheimer's disease was developed, and through genetic screening using this, his team have identified many potential candidates expected to be involved in γ-secretase activity or APP metabolic processes. Through follow-up studies on these genes, they will try to reveal the regulatory mechanism of membrane protein cleavage by γ-secretase and the function of APP/Notch intracellular domains.
